IMG_9954

This is a Rephotography workshop with Gary McLeod in connection with an exhibition at 1839 Contemporary Gallery in Taipei. The workshop is an opportunity to see some waterfalls, share in a collective experience of looking and contribute to an ongoing body of photographs.
Workshop Outline:

There are three waterfalls on this trail: Hegu Falls, Motian Falls and Pipa Dong falls. After a gentle hike past the first falls, we will head to Motian Falls for the following activity:

1. Rephotographing a collection of existing images of the falls, paying attention to a variety of factors (technical, contextual, historical etc.)

2. Documenting the whole process and experience from beginning to end in your own way.

3. After the workshop, all photographs generated during the workshop will be collected together and participants will be asked to make a collage of their experience. These images will later be included in an exhibition of waterfalls from Japan and Taiwan (date/location/venue TBD).

If we have time (and everyone feels okay), we will do the same activity for Pipa Dong falls.

Details:
Meetup: Sandiaoling Station 09:45.
Number of participants: 6–10 (RSVP)
Cost: FREE but you have to pay for your own transport, food etc.
Safety: Although the hike is generally safe, you are responsible for your own safety.
Requirements: good shoes, water, food, camera (of course)
WEATHER WARNING: if the weather is bad (heavy rain, typhoon etc) the event will be CANCELLED. Please check for updates.

Working with pictures of Japan made in 1875 as part of a British scientific expedition, McLeod invited contemporary residents to join him in collectively rephotographing and documenting sites where the original pictures were taken. Openly sharing the gathered visual material amongst the groups, each participant was then invited to create a collage that communicated “their” experience.

August 27th (Saturday) afternoon, meet artist Gary McLeod at the Reception and Art Talk at 1839 Contemporary Gallery in Taipei, Taiwan. The exhibition showcases Gary and Others over 26 images from recent works.

Free Art Talk by Gary at 3pm on Saturday 27th of August.  The talk’s audience will be limited to 60 people, and advance seat reservations are recommended. Meanwhile, welcome to join Gary for a participatory rephotography workshop on August 28th (Sunday).

About Artist:

Gary McLeod is a British photographer who deliberately opens up his practice to other camera users in order to learn from the improbabilities that only they can make photographically possible. With a background in Digital Arts and commercial practice, he received a PhD in Photography from London College of Communication for research into rephotography and the Challenger expedition (1872–1876).

Love, wonder, hope. That is all I need……said by Wannes Morino

‘This is the excuse that I’m making’, the young Belgian photographer Wannes Morino shows a glimpse of how his world looks like. A world that, however it is the same world we all live in, can look very dierent at times.

His crafted black and white prints show details of the world around us, mostly a ‘natural’ world without human characters. His work is the result of his wandering soul, embracing the solitude of nature and chance encounters down the road. ‘Choosing a simple lifestyle keeps my head free from clutter and open for the true joys of life.’

Through this exhibition to share Wannes’ work to an audience, and hopefully provoke emotions with the visitors, maybe a smile, a new feeling, a new hope, to share a little bit of my world with others.  Also I’m hoping to get feedback to help me get inspired and motivated for new work.
