Exploring European Photography

Curated by|Edward, I-Chien CHIU, phD

The invention of photography is one of the greatest scientific and artistic mediums since the Renaissance. Photography was born in France in 1839. On August 19 of the same year, the French Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts held a joint meeting at the Institute de France to officially announce the daguerreotype to the world. Subsequently, the French government generously made this technology freely available to all humanity. This invention opened up infinite possibilities for visual experience. To date, photography has a history of over 185 years and has profoundly impacted the progress of human civilization and the development of science and art.

From the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, Europe experienced a golden age of photographic art. Since then, photography and photographic art have gained widespread popularity worldwide. Since the 1980s, photographic art has become mainstream in contemporary art, widely collected by museums and collectors globally.

In recent years, Taiwan has also begun to pay attention to photographic art. However, European photographic works have not been introduced to Taiwan in a balanced manner. This time, 1839 Contemporary Gallery is hosting its first exhibition focused on European photography, showcasing over 30 works by 14 photographers from 8 European countries. This exhibition aims to provide photography art enthusiasts with a deeper understanding and appreciation of European photographic art.

Exhibited photographers include, Alain Laboile (France )、Anastasia Chernyavsky (Russia)、Anna Hurtig (Sweden)、Bogdan Frymorgen (United Kingdom)、Deborah Parkin (United Kingdom)、Elena Kalis (Russia)、Eric Kellerman (United Kingdom)、Gary Roderick McLeod (United Kingdom)、Gerald Berghammer (Austria)、Ina Forstinger  (Austria)、Jacqueline Roberts (France )、Michael Kenna (United Kingdom)、Michael Nischke (Germany )、Michael Wolf (Germany)、Tatiana Maksimovich (Russia)、Victor Cobo (Spain).
